God's promises throughout the Old Testament came to fruition through the life of Jesus Jesus now makes another promise: that he is coming back. But this time he isn't coming with such humble beginnings as a baby. This time he is coming back as the King of Glory, the Lord of Lords, and is coming in power to end the sin of the world and bring his bride, the church, home.
He says he is coming soon but we are still here and it's been over 2000 years since he said this to John. How is that soon? Well when you are God, who lives outside of time, then the passing time line is nothing. God says our lives are but a vapor in His mind (Psalm 39:5). Also God wants to save as many as possible. Think if he had come 5 years ago would you be amongst those saved? 2 years ago? 10 years? God's timing is perfect and we trust in that and await His perfect timing in His return.
John says, "Blessed are those who was their robes. They will be permitted to enter through the gates of the city and eat the fruit from the tree of life" (Revelation 22:14). We don't know when Jesus is coming and so we need to make sure we are constantly "washing our robes." This means identifying the sins in our lives that are keeping us from Jesus and repenting of them. Repenting isn't just asking forgiveness but an abandonment of the practice itself. It is seeking forgiveness and never returning to that sin. Repent, for the time is near!
